Toenail discoloration is caused by a toenail fungus. Oftentimes toenail fungus will start out by discoloring, fogging or thickening of the nail. This may then lead to black, yellow, or brown fungal spots. Often times infected toenails will chip away.

Nail fungus develops frequently in moist places. These places include public showers, saunas, public pools, or damp sweaty sneakers. Another common way to get a toenail fungus is to agitate the nail inside a sweaty shoe. This will cause the nail to thicken and often results in a nail fungus. Another way toenail fungus is often caught is by cutting the nail too short and causing minor cuts leaving the nail exposed to fungus.
Treating fungus takes a little dedication but with the write methods and a little persistence you'll be able to treat it. I do not recommend taking any ingested medications for fungus because they cause unwanted side effects and illness. There are safer remedies which are cheaper and often times more effective than any prescription drug. Over the counter medicines are generally ineffective because they fail to treat the fungus at its source.
I treated my toenail fungus by using a combination of techniques. First I bathed my foot in hot water so the nail absorbed the moisture. I then gently filed the nail down a bit. Do not go overboard on filing! Next I soaked my feet in beer for about thirty minutes each treatment two times a day. After treatment I applied a topical treatment. Within about 12 days I started seeing mild results and was fully cured within a few months.
